A first-night itinerary on the lake, from the depot village to the county-seat square.

You do not need a boat to get the Lake Lanier evening right. Here is the loop we send first-timers on: daylight at the water, dinner by it, and the square after.

Flowery Branch, golden hour

Start at Flowery Branch Bay Park for the best free sunset on the south shore, then walk the two minutes to Main Street. Fish Tales Lakeside Grille's dock table is the obvious reservation; Antebellum, in the old stone church building, is the move if you want steak over grouper.

Gainesville after dark

Ten minutes up the road, the square on Washington runs warm: grab an Atlas Pizza slice, watch the block from the steps, and finish with a coffee on the courthouse side. With daylight left, the Atlanta Botanical Garden Gainesville closes with a lake walk.

Full lake communities appear in our city guides, with parks and paddling picks.
