History of Snellville
Snellville grew around the store and post office of Thomas Snell, who became the community's first postmaster in 1874. The town was named for him and incorporated in 1923.
For most of its first century Snellville was a farm crossroads, served by wagon roads rather than rails, and it stayed that way longer than most Gwinnett towns.
The interstate era changed the arithmetic. With I-85 and later US 78 widening, Snellville became the retail and residential hub of south-central Gwinnett, and the old crossroads attitude survived inside a full suburban economy.
