Demorest is a small city in Habersham County built around Piedmont University, the private college founded here in 1897 that gives the town its character and its year-round population of students and staff. Downtown is a block of old storefronts on Georgia Street, Demorest Springs Park holds the town's festivals including one of Georgia's longest-running July 4th celebrations, and the mountains start ten minutes north.
