Getting around Demorest
Demorest sits on the Georgia foothills edge with one highway story: US-441 runs the city's west side north to Cornelia and the mountains and south toward Gainesville. The mountain roads that start at the city limit are the real reason people drive here.
Helen is about 15 minutes by the foothills roads, Tallulah Gorge about 30, and Gainesville and I-985 about 35 minutes south. The car is the whole transit system.
The roads
441 through town, the mountains beyond
US-441 is the town's main street and highway, carrying the Cornelia and Clarkesville traffic and the mountain tourism. The foothills roads off the city limit run to Helen, Cleveland, and the national forest, and the campus streets of Piedmont University are best on foot.
Transit
The honest car note
There is no transit service to speak of in Demorest; the town runs on cars, and the college campus and downtown run on foot. For the Atlanta commutes, I-985 at Gainesville is the practical connection, about 35 minutes south.
