The story of Dacula
History of Dacula
Dacula began as the crossroads community of Chinquapin Grove in the late 1800s. When the Seaboard Air Line Railroad built through in 1891, the stop took on the railroad camp name Hoke while locals used Freeman, after postmaster John W. Freeman.
Freeman is credited with coining Dacula by drawing letters from Decatur and Atlanta, a naming habit common on the new rail lines. The town was incorporated in 1905 and grew as a farm and rail stop on Gwinnett's east side.
The railroad era faded, but the crossroads habit did not. Dacula today is the old downtown at the center of new subdivisions, still the small-town counterweight to the I-85 corridor ten minutes away.
