The story of Alpharetta
History of Alpharetta
Alpharetta began as a trading post on the Cherokee trail, around a Methodist camp ground known as New Prospect. It was incorporated in 1858 for a specific job: to serve as the county seat of the newly created Milton County.
Milton County merged into Fulton in 1932, and Alpharetta lost its courthouse role but kept the town. The name's origin is legend rather than record, with accounts pointing to a Cherokee chief's daughter or a character in a popular song of the era.
The modern chapter is technology and growth: the old county seat became a tech employment hub along GA 400, and the downtown that survived the Milton County years now anchors one of the metro's fastest-built suburbs.
