Alpharetta History
Alpharetta's history runs in three acts: the Cherokee-era crossroads, the Milton County seat that dated from 1858, and the highway-era tech town that remade the city after GA-400 arrived.
The name, long said to come from Greek for first town, reflects the boosterism of its founding generation.
The founding
A trading post becomes a county seat
The area began as a trading post at the New Prospect camp ground. Alpharetta was created as the seat of the new Milton County in 1858, kept the courthouse for seven decades, and merged into Fulton County in 1932 when Milton was dissolved.
The highway era
GA-400 and the modern city
The highway and the office parks turned the farm town into a job center, and the 2010s built the downtown renaissance and Avalon. Today the city is the closest thing North Fulton has to its own downtown.
