About Alpharetta

Alpharetta incorporated in 1858 as the seat of the short-lived Milton County, grew for a century as a quiet farm town, and then became one of metro Atlanta's biggest job centers when GA-400 and the tech campuses arrived.

Today the city runs from the old downtown at the Town Green to Avalon and the Windward business district, with Wills Park and the Big Creek Greenway threading through it.

The short version

A county seat that outlived its county

Alpharetta was created as the seat of Milton County in 1858, went through the agricultural century, and merged into Fulton County in 1932. The modern city arrived with the highway and the office parks, and the walkable core at downtown and Avalon is the recent chapter: restaurants, the green, and the festival calendar.

Fulton County Schools serves the city, and daily life splits between the walkable core and the office-and-retail corridors along GA-400.

How the city works

A full-service city on the GA-400 spine

The city provides

  • Alpharetta police, fire, water, and the parks system.
  • Planning and the downtown redevelopment program.
  • Community programs through parks and recreation.

The county keeps

  • Fulton County Schools for all city addresses.
  • The county court and elections machinery.
  • Part of the tax digest and county services.

Getting around

GA-400 is the spine, and the commute is the trade

GA-400 runs the length of the city and carries most of the southbound commute to Atlanta; the express lanes and their tolls set the travel math. SR 9 and Old Milton Parkway handle the local moves.

Times and the honest commute picture live on the getting around page.
