The story of Suwanee
History of Suwanee
Suwanee began as a station on the railroad built through Gwinnett in 1871, named for the nearby Suwanee Creek. The creek name itself is Cherokee in origin, said to mean echo.
A spur line to Lawrenceville followed in 1881, and the town settled into a quiet rail stop for most of the next century. Suwanee was formally incorporated in 1948.
Its defining era came late: in the 1990s the city staked its future on a real town green, and the Suwanee Town Center lawn became the model other Georgia suburbs copied. The railroad still runs past the same spot, but the town's identity now belongs to the green.
