About Suwanee
Suwanee is a city in Gwinnett County, about thirty miles northeast of Atlanta, built around one of the most deliberate downtowns on this corridor: Town Center Park, the amphitheater, and the shopping and dining blocks that surround it. The name goes back to the Shawnee people who camped along the Chattahoochee, and the city incorporated in 1949.
Suwanee's growth came with I-85 in the 1970s, and today it runs a council-manager city with a reputation for doing the civic stuff right: the farmers market, the concerts, the festival calendar, and a Town Center that actually gets used.
What it is
From a river camp to a planned civic center
The Shawnee people camped along the Chattahoochee here, and Suwanee Old Town appears in United States treaties as early as 1817. A post office followed in 1837 and the railroad depot in 1871, but the city stayed small farming country until I-85 arrived in the 1970s. Suwanee was incorporated as a city on February 25, 1949.
The defining move came in 2003, when the city opened Town Center Park: ten acres of walkways, gardens, an amphitheater, and the Big Splash fountain, wrapped in the mixed-use blocks of Town Center. It turned Suwanee from a bedroom suburb into a place with a real civic center.
