Suwanee History
Suwanee's history runs from a Shawnee camp on the Chattahoochee to one of the most deliberate downtowns in Gwinnett County. The name appears in United States treaties as early as 1817, the post office came in 1837, the railroad depot in 1871, and the city charter in 1949.
The modern chapter is the Town Center: the park, the amphitheater, and the Big Splash fountain that opened in 2003 and remade the city's center.
The founding story
A river name and a railroad depot
The Shawnee people camped along the Chattahoochee here, and Suwanee Old Town appears in United States treaties as early as 1817. A post office was established in 1837, the railroad depot came in 1871, and the settlement grew slowly as a farming community. Suwanee was incorporated as a city on February 25, 1949.
The modern era
The interstate and the Town Center
The growth along I-85 in the 1970s turned Suwanee into a bedroom suburb, and in 2003 the city answered with Town Center Park: ten acres of walkways, gardens, an amphitheater, and the Big Splash fountain, wrapped in mixed-use blocks. It gave the city a center it never had, and it is the reason Suwanee reads differently from the strip-built cities around it.
