Snellville runs under a council-manager form of government. An elected mayor and city council set policy, and a professional city manager appointed by the council runs the day-to-day operations.
The city was incorporated in 1923. Meetings are public and on a regular schedule.

The city runs its own administration, the Town Green, T. W. Briscoe Park, and the downtown. The county side handles the schools through the four Gwinnett clusters, property tax, elections, and the large county parks including South Gwinnett and Lenora.
