Blue Ridge Weekend Loop
A Blue Ridge based loop that actually earns a weekend: Blairsville's square, Georgia's highest point at Brasstown Bald, and Vogel State Park's mountain lake, about 100 miles of driving with a full stop at each.
Route: Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Brasstown Bald, Vogel State Park, Blue Ridge
Distance
About 100 miles round trip from Blue Ridge
Drive time
Roughly 2.5 hours of driving; a full day with stops
Time to allow
Full day; turn it into a weekend with a night in Blue Ridge
Best season
Mid-October for color; May to June for green
Blue Ridge anchors this loop: 23 miles east to Blairsville, then a 20-mile run up to Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest point, then back through Blairsville and 11 miles south on US-19/129 to Vogel State Park. The return leg to Blue Ridge is about 34 miles. It is the mountains in one day: one resort city, one historic square, one summit, and one mountain lake, with no stop more than 40 minutes from the next.

Family notes
Doing it with kids
- The Brasstown Bald shuttle and short paved summit walk make Georgia's highest point a family stop, no long hike required.
- Vogel's lakeside loop is the easy walk of the day; bring a picnic and plan to sit.
- The loop's car time is gentle, the longest stretch without a stop is about 30 minutes.
Weather and safety
Before you go
- The Bald is the cold spot, often 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Blue Ridge. Bring a layer even in summer.
- Afternoon storms build fast over the ridge. Do the summit by early afternoon and save the lake for later.
- GA-180 Spur to the Bald is steep and narrow. Take the shuttle and let someone else drive it.
