About Winder
Winder is the county seat and largest city in Barrow County, and it has one of the more complicated origin stories in the region. It began as a settlement the Creek and Cherokee knew as Snodon, was renamed Jug Tavern, and was finally called Winder in 1893 for the railroad man John H. Winder.
Before Barrow County existed, the city straddled three counties, Jackson, Walton, and Gwinnett, which met in the middle of the city. The Georgia General Assembly carved Barrow County out of those three in 1914, and Winder became the seat.

From Jug Tavern to the county seat
The settlement the Creek and Cherokee knew as Snodon was settled by Europeans in 1793 and became known as the Jug, then Jug Tavern. Railroads arrived in the 1880s, the city was incorporated in 1884 as Jug Tavern, and it was renamed Winder in 1893 for John H. Winder, a builder and general manager of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. A Civil War engagement, the Battle of Jug Tavern, was fought nearby in July 1864.
Before Barrow County existed, the city straddled Jackson, Walton, and Gwinnett counties, which met at the center of the city and caused years of legal and tax disputes. The Georgia General Assembly carved Barrow County out of those three in 1914, and Winder became the county seat and largest municipality in the new county.
