Hall County · The Lake Lanier city

About Flowery Branch

Flowery Branch is a city in Hall County on the shore of Lake Lanier, named from the Cherokee Anaguluskee, which translates roughly to flowers on the branch. It was founded in 1874 as a railroad stop on the Air-Line Railroad, and the depot that anchored it still stands as a museum.

Today Flowery Branch is known for two things beyond the lake: the Atlanta Falcons train here at their year-round headquarters, and the historic downtown around the depot has become a proper small-city center with restaurants, the market, and the bay park.

What it is

A Cherokee name and a railroad stop

The area was originally Cherokee territory, known by the Cherokee name Anaguluskee, flowers on the branch, a reference to the wildflowers along the streams. White settlers, mostly livestock farmers, were there before 1874, when the city was founded as a railroad stop on the Richmond and Danville Air-Line Railroad connecting Charlotte to Atlanta.

The railroad ran the city for a century, and the depot from around 1900 still stands as a historic museum with a caboose exhibit. The 2020 census put the population at just over nine thousand, and the lake, the depot, and the Falcons complex now define the city.
