About Johns Creek
Johns Creek is a full-service city in north Fulton County that began operating on December 1, 2006, after voters approved incorporation the previous July. It runs its own police, fire, and parks and recreation departments, while Fulton County keeps courts, tax administration, libraries, and 911 dispatch.
The 2020 Census counted 82,453 residents, which makes Johns Creek one of Georgia's larger cities by population even though it is one of its youngest. The practical identity is residential and park-first: master-planned neighborhoods, HOA pools, and the river parks along the Chattahoochee.
What it is
A new city with a full-service government
Johns Creek was created by referendum on July 18, 2006, and began operating as a city on December 1 of that year. It was the second city created in Georgia since the early twentieth century, following Sandy Springs in 2005, and it followed the same legislative path: state enabling law first, then a local vote.
The city runs its own police department, established in April 2008, and its own fire department, established in October 2008. It also runs a parks and recreation department, which brought park operations in-house in 2023, and the city council and mayor oversee planning, permitting, and the day-to-day city budget.

Johns Creek sits in north Fulton County, about 30 miles north of downtown Atlanta. GA 400 runs west of the city, the Chattahoochee River runs along its western edge, and the neighboring cities are Alpharetta, Duluth, Peachtree Corners, and Suwanee across the county line.
The city has no downtown in the traditional sense. Its commercial spine runs along State Route 141, locally Medlock Bridge Road and Peachtree Parkway, with State Bridge Road, Abbotts Bridge Road, and Jones Bridge Road carrying the daily errands.

By population, yes. The 2020 Census counted 82,453 people, and recent estimates hold around 81,000 to 82,000. By land area it is a mid-sized suburb that happens to be incorporated, not a dense urban city.
Does Johns Creek have its own police and fire?
Yes, both. The police department launched in April 2008 and the fire department in October 2008, and both are city departments today. Fulton County's 911 center handles emergency call-taking and dispatch.
Why did Johns Creek incorporate?
