Seaboard, the fire, and Old Town

Lilburn History

Lilburn's history is the railroad's history: born on the Seaboard line in 1890, burned and rebuilt, and preserved for the last generation as Old Town.

The depot that started it all still stands, and the trains still run past it.

The founding

The Seaboard town

The railroad founded Lilburn in 1890 and named it for its superintendent; the town incorporated in 1910 and grew on the cotton and shipping traffic of the line.

The preservation

Old Town's second act

A 1920s fire and the hard years took the early prosperity, but the original district survived, and Old Town's restoration turned the storefronts and the depot into the town's best feature.
