Getting around Ellijay
Getting around Ellijay is a mountain-highway story with one clear spine. Highway 515, the four-lane continuation of I-575, runs straight through and past town toward Blue Ridge, US 76 and Highway 52 cross it downtown, and Highway 52 East is the apple corridor out to the orchards. Almost every trip in Ellijay starts on one of those.
There is no fixed-route bus and no passenger rail into the city; the honest transit answer is the demand-response MATS service for medical and senior rides. Every road, distance, and airport below is verified; where something does not exist, this page says so plainly.
The roads
The highways a mountain county seat runs on
Highway 515, the Appalachian Highway
The four-lane main artery that becomes I-575 with no toll as it runs south toward the metro. Through Ellijay it carries the traffic north toward Blue Ridge and the mountains, and it is the road almost every long trip in the county begins on.
US 76 and Highway 52 through town
US 76 runs east-west across the county and meets Highway 515 at Ellijay. Highway 52, the east-west route through the downtown, is the road that becomes the apple corridor out to the orchards on the east side.
Highway 52 East, the apple corridor

Highway 382, the Carters Lake road
The connector running west from the Highway 515 side toward the Carters Lake corridor, the road the lake runs and the southwest recreation takes.

What the drives to the usual destinations actually take
Times below are published figures for normal, uncongested traffic on the roads Ellijay actually uses. The weekday peaks and the October tourist season change them considerably, and the Atlanta run is the one everyone asks about first.
Downtown Atlanta
About an hour and a half
Roughly 75 to 80 miles via Highway 515 turning into I-575, with published figures of about an hour and a half in normal traffic. At peak and in October, add real time.
Jasper
About 20 to 25 minutes
About 17 miles south on Highway 515 to the Piedmont Mountainside hospital campus, the closest full hospital and the practical county business run.
Blue Ridge
About 25 minutes
North on Highway 515 to the Blue Ridge side, where the scenic railway and the mountain town draw the day-trip traffic.
Air and rail
The airports, the railway, and the honest transit answer
The nearest commercial airport is Chattanooga Metropolitan, roughly 67 miles by road and the closest gateway from the county. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is the main hub, about 87 miles and an hour and a half to two hours in normal traffic. There is no scheduled transit from either airport to Ellijay; the car is the plan.
There is no passenger rail into the city. The 1912 L&N depot downtown no longer serves trains, and the nearest Amtrak stops are the Crescent-route stations at Gainesville and Atlanta. For an excursion, the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge, about 25 minutes up Highway 515, is the nearest scenic rail day trip; the scenic train guide covers it.
For transit, the honest answer is MATS, the demand-response service run by North Georgia Community Action for Gilmer and the surrounding counties. It handles mainly medical and senior rides; there is no fixed-route bus inside the city, and nothing about that changes with the season.
